Review:
Who doesn’t like
freedom? Woman should have freedom of choice too. The short story A Perfect
Life by Chitra Divakaruni wonderfully depicts that woman can make their own
choices. They can do whatever they like regardless of the pressure of the
society or sometimes other women put on them. The role of a woman is not merely
confined to bearing children, they can have dreams and goals too. The story is
included in a collection of short stories named Arranged Marriage. The
story presents various themes such as, Motherly love, Modern v/s Traditional
thinking, Empowerment, Feminism, Marriage, Law.
Meera Bose, the
protagonist of the story is an Asian immigrant living the life in America at
her own terms. She desires an independent life and did not wanted to marry or
have any children. Her mother pressurizes her upon marrying an Indian guy of
her choice. However, she already lives in with a boy named Richard. One day,
she found a little boy who completely changes her life and circumstances. Meera’s
illusion of having a perfect life is at stake because of the boy.
The story cherishes
the power of mother-love. However, it also challenges the social norm about
marriage institution. A woman should make her own decision. Her whole purpose
of life is not marriage or becoming a mother only. She can do whatever she
wants. And what if it isn’t what society thinks she should do as woman, she
must be appreciated and supported even then. She has her own existence too.
The story is
narrated from the perspective of Meera herself. It’s a smooth read. It can be
finished in one sitting and there isn’t any unfathomable sentences or words. I
specially recommend it to girls and women.
Recommendation:
- A must read
- Can add to TBR list
- Won’t be disappointed
- Can read once
