Title: Without Merit
Author: Colleen Hoover
Type: Novel
Chapters: 18
Characters: Merit Voss, Sagan, Honor Voss, the Voss family
Review:
Who isn’t got
family issues? Parents can make mistakes too. Without Merit by Colleen
Hoover portrays the same idea. Any issue can be solved if we can be honest with
each other and talk instead of just assuming things about each other. The novel
is about family, siblings, secrets and mistakes which keep the main the
character Merit and her family alienated from each other.
“I have an impressive collection of trophies I did not win.” The first line introduces us to the main character of the novel, Merit Voss. A seventeen year old girl who feels like a stranger in her own house. The members of the Voss family are disconnected and not united. Merit blames her father to be the cause of their disintegrated family condition. While buying a trophy for herself, Merit meets a boy named Sagan. She is attracted to him but hey, he is her twin sister’s boyfriend! Moreover, next day she finds that he now is a new resident in her own house. It is hard for Merit to avoid him.
In a drunken
condition, Merit writes a letter to every member of the family revealing all the
dark secrets she had been keeping ever since. Her father’s secret, her
brother’s secret, her sister’s secret. She can’t keep it anymore. She is
exhausted. She is so fed up with the selfish behavior of her family members and
tries to kill herself. The letters creates even more issues within the family.
Will they be able to solve it or the family will be shattered even more?
Family is an
important aspect in one’s life. Sometimes, the world seem unlivable when you
don’t have a family to rely on emotionally. Merit has no one in her family on
whom she can depend emotionally. And when you can’t have the boy you like, it
adds to the misery even more. This causes depression which Merit must
overcome. The novel also celebrates the importance of self-love.
The novel is an
easy read. It has eighteen chapters and wow what a read! I loved that the
language is so simple. It is narrated from the perspective of the title
character.
