Review:
“If you make a
mistake, you learn from it. If you never make a mistake, you’re never the
wiser… the more mistakes you have made, the more you have learned.”
No human is
perfect. If we are meant to be perfect, we wouldn’t be humans. A man chases
perfection till his last breath. He pretends to be good, he wants to be
appreciated for his goodness. He wanted to be the one who never makes a
mistake. He who can do morally well for the society and never fails. Is it
really possible? Flawed by Cecelia Ahern indicates that it is. That
is what Flawed system believes. The system brands the people who had made an
error in judgment and declare them as Flawed. But what happens when it is
protested that even the Flawed system is also flawed?
The novel is set
in an imaginary world where there is a system called “Flawed system”. It is run
by the Guild which is like a highest court for managing the Flawed system. There
are rules which one must follow after they are branded as a Flawed. They cannot
have a normal privileges or luxuries. They are forced to eat what the Guild
says, drink what the guild says, and even think what the Guild tell them to do.
If one happen to break the rule intentionally or unintentionally, they are
punished in the worst possible way.
The novel opens
with Celestine North who is living a perfect life. She has everything she think
she deserves. But when one incident changes her perspective and she questions
the Flawed system, she is declared as Flawed. While travelling in a bus, she
aids an old man who is branded ‘Flawed’ which is considered as breaking the
Flawed rule. However, she is asked to tell a lie which is also against the
Flawed rule.
What happens
when she decides to tell the truth instead? Telling the truth shouldn’t entitle
for punishment. Is it crime to tell the truth?
Sometimes you
think that you belong somewhere. Like you perfectly fit here. While in fact, it
doesn’t matter at all. Celestine thought that she belonged to the perfect
world. She could never make a mistake. She exceled in every aspect of her life.
However, soon she is thrown out of the perfect world. And now she has to deal
with the Flawed world. It doesn’t matter where you are or where do you belong,
as much as you do the right thing and benefit humanity, you are a perfect
human. Throughout the novel, there is an emphasis on the fine blend of “Compassion
and Logic”. If you think something is right and as long as it does not harm
anyone or yourself, you are doing the right thing. Humanity is the only mean to
achieve perfection.
The novel is an
easy read. At first it may be confusing a bit but as you progress it won’t be
hard to understand the meaning. The language is medium. The novel also has a
sequel which would be denouement of the first book.
