Are woman really aware of their capabilities? It is
really necessary for a woman to explore the world, to find and make her own
identity. She must not be confined within the walls. She has every right to
live a life as she wants. Clothes by Chitra Divakaruni remarkably
explores this idea. In this short story, Sumita, the heroine decides to search
for her own identity against all the restrictions society is trying to lay upon
her. The story is a part of a collection of short stories titled Arranged
Marriage.
Sumita is soon going to marry a man who lives in
America and runs a store for living. She is reluctant to leave behind her birth
place and India but she must go with a husband as an ideal bride should. Soon she
adjusts herself in the modern life of America. She even has dream of making her
own identity. But circumstances perhaps aren’t in her favor. She must stand up
for herself. She cannot spent her whole life within the walls. She wants to
explore the world. She wanted to make her own identity. Will she able to
overcome all the obstacles on her way?
The story presents the importance of identity. The
different phases of Sumita’s life are symbolized by clothes of different
colors. A woman must make her own identity in the world. She should work, which
ultimately would help her to know her own worth. It is important for her to be
aware of her abilities and potential. She must be independent in a way that she
can take her own decision without being influenced by anyone.
I personally love the story. Language is simple.
