Review:
Love isn’t
always easy. It is determination of the lovers to be together and overcoming
all the obstacles in their path. Slammed by Colleen Hoover presents the
sweet love story of Layken and Will, who are meant to be together but the fate
is not in their favor.
Layken moves
from Texas to Ypsilanti after the death of his father with her mother and nine
year old brother. She meets a boy named Will Cooper who lives across from
street. They goes on a date and realizes that it is not just an attraction. But
soon their desires are crashed when Layken finds out that Will is her teacher
at the school. As Will is forced to choose the career for the well-being of his
brother, he cannot be with Layken anymore. It is hard for them to get along
when they are forced to see each other under total different roles i.e. as a
teacher and student only.
Soon things seem
to be normal between the two. They started getting along as neighbors. But one
day, Will confesses that he still loves her but they still can’t be together.
Layken have had enough. Layken finds that her mother has a lung cancer and is soon
going to die. She completely detaches herself from Will and focuses on taking
care of her mother and family. She is determined not to give a single chance to
him from now on.
The novel is an
excellent read. Each chapter starts with few lyrics of Avett Brothers bands’ songs.
These lyrics artistically foreshadows the upcoming action and inspires the
characters to tackle the hard situations they are facing. Another wonderful aspect
in the novel is the Slam, it is a poetry competition where the characters
express their feelings by pouring it out through the medium of words. I really
liked the character of Eddie, Layken’s best friend. She is fun, full of life
girl who makes the situation light with her sarcasm in the novel.
Recommendation:
- A must read
- Can add to TBR list
- Hard to put down
- Can read once
